Chapel Carn Brea

Conserved by the National Trust, Chapel Carn Brea is a hill found to the south of St Just. A popular spot for birdwatching and important historical site, it offers spectacular views of West Penwith.
Every year a beacon is lit at the top of Chapel Carn Brea by the Mayor of St Just. This is the first in a chain of ‘Midsummer Eve bonfires’ organised by The Old Cornwall Society.
The bonfires date back to early pagan times when they were held just after the summer solstice to ask for a blessing on local crops. Today, adapted by the Christian church, the fires are now lit to celebrate the eve of St John the Baptist.
