Richard has set up the practice with a developed and well rounded knowledge base for both new build and refurbishment structural engineering projects as well as detailing sensitive refurbishment of historic structures in Cornwall. Our work with existing and historic buildings has helped develop a good understanding of how buildings perform, are maintained and how they can be adapted, all of which we also always consider in the design of new buildings.

Richard Gowan Consulting is able to offer a full range of services from the production of supporting ‘building regulations’ calculations for the structural engineering design of new structural elements for a new build or extension project through to being an active member of a design team for more ‘involved’ projects. It is our firm belief that the advice we can impart early on in a project’s lifespan are of greatest benefit in helping develop a well thought through design for any project.

Outside of design we are able to offer a structural appraisal service reporting on the condition of the whole or part of an existing building which has signs of a structural defect, often at the recommendation of a chartered surveyor.
